Sophia was born on 14th July 2011, 5 weeks early, at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast. At 5 days old she was diagnosed with Meningitis. Thankfully she had not been discharged from hospital. It was discovered that she had the viral form of meningitis and had been born with the virus.
As she was critically ill, she was admitted into the neo-natal intensive care unit at the Royal. She required round the clock care along with a host of medications and several blood transfusions.
The virus then affected her other organs including her heart and she developed Myocarditis and cardiac failure and had to be transferred to the children's intensive care at the Royal(PICU)
She was put on a ventilator as her lungs had also been affected by the virus. Her liver too was badly damaged.
Sophia then developed bacterial septicemia and we did not think that she would make it.
Amazingly, and miraculously, Sophia pulled through and was discharged from hospital after 8 long weeks. Sophia continues to do well with regular hospital appointments.
SO WHY THE SOPHIA FUND?
We want to aknowledge the excellent work that these units do. Never did we imagine that this story would be Sophia's story. No-one expects their newborn to be so critically ill. Neo-natal and PICU are places that we never really considered existed. We certainly never considered our child would be cared for there.
During Sophia's time in these units we realised how much of the equipment was donated. We are so grateful for the excellent care provided for Sophia and we would like to help in a small way.
No parent knows if their child will ever need the care these units.
So the Sophia fund aims to raise money for the Neo-natal special care unit and the PICU at the RVH to help them continue with the fantastic work that they do.
